After graduation, he studied mathematics at Oxford University, where he was awarded the Gibbs Prize in 2000, and in 2003 he obtained a PhD in Mathematical Sciences on "Elliptic regularity versus rank-one convexity" with Stefan Müller at the Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in den Naturwissenschaften in Leipzig.
